Shakira was recently sighted at Art Basel Miami Beach during the special VIP preview, browsing through artworks.

This came after a dramatic conclusion to her long-running tax fraud trial in Barcelona; just one day prior, she had secured a settlement and been cleared of any jail time despite having maintained her innocence for years.

Attendees of the art fair were treated to a surprise sighting of the star, who her bodyguard accompanied.

The latter did an excellent job at keeping away any prying paparazzi.

Shakira's Expensive Taste

According to Page Six, the "Hips Don't Lie" singer took particular interest in "High Priestess," a 2023 work by artist Mickalene Thomas displayed at the Levy Gorvy Dayan gallery, taking video footage of it.

Much to Shakira's disappointment, the $500,000 Thomas work she had set her sights on was no longer available. Luckily, a gallerist was at hand to reveal different options from the artist that were still attainable.

The art world was abuzz at Art Basel Miami, with some of the biggest names in the scene on hand. Notable attendees included tennis superstar Serena Williams, legendary model Cindy Crawford, and renowned art collectors Peter Brant, Tico Mugrabi, and Steve Wynn.

Meanwhile, acclaimed artist JR mingled, as were creatives Haas Brothers and FriendsWithYou - a duo comprising Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III.

Tax Fraud Drama

In a recent agreement with Spanish prosecutors, singer Shakira will avoid the upcoming $15.6 tax fraud trial.

The iconic Colombian pop star has agreed with Spanish prosecutors to prevent her from standing trial in Barcelona. Allegations were made that she had not paid $15.6 in taxes between 2012 and 2014.

Rather than risk a three-year prison sentence, the "Whenever Wherever" hitmaker accepted an additional fine of $472,000, according to the judge's ruling during the trial's initial hearing.

A statement released by her Spanish communication agency declared that "[this] decision responds primarily to personal and emotional reasons rather than legal considerations."

She stated that while she was ready to vindicate her innocence, Shakira ultimately prioritized her career and family above all else.

Judge Jose Manuel del Amo Sanchez inquired if she accepted the proposed consequences. "Do you recognize the facts and conform with the new penalties that have been requested?" Her reply was simple: "Yes."

But her thoughts on success came with a warning, "I have come to realize that attaining victory is not worth it when it costs years of your life.

In response to claims of fraud by Spanish authorities, the singer vowed to fight what she deemed false accusations. The prosecutor's office requested a jail sentence lasting up to eight years in addition to the reimbursement of taxes they alleged she owed.

According to the claims, Shakira spent several years living in Spain and was considered a regular resident there. Additionally, it is said that she purchased a property in Barcelona in May 2012 to serve as her family's home.
