Celine Dion's health has caused worry among her legion of fans worldwide. Ever since she was diagnosed with the rare neurological disease that is Stiff Person Syndrome, fans have feared for her health.
Now, her sister, Claudette Dion has given a significant yet very distressing Celine Dion health update.
Celine Dion Health Update 2023
Speaking to the French Magazine 7 Jours, Claudette revealed that while Celine Dion is working hard, "she doesn't have control over her muscles."
Celine Dion was diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, prompting her to cancel all of her world tours together to aid in her recovery.
"What breaks my heart is that she's always been disciplined. She's always worked hard," Claudette added.
Celine Dion's sister emphasized that Celine's "ultimate hope" is to meet her fans and return to what she loves most - singing and performing onstage.
However, she noted that since she lost control over her muscles, she has also lost control of her vocal cords, and also her heart - saying that there isn't "enough research" on the rare disease to help her support her through it.
Can Celine Dion's Stiff Person Syndrome Be Treated?
According to The Cleveland Clinic, Stiff Person Syndrome is a rare chronic condition that causes the person's muscles to stiffen which causes painful muscle spasms. However, the symptoms vary from one person to another.
The National Library of Medicine and National Center for Biotechnology Information says there are two major treatments for Stiff Person Syndrome: The first is GABAergic, which is Gamma-Aminobutyric acid therapy and immunotherapy. The other one is intrathecal baclofen or intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG).
For Johns Hopkins Stiff-Person Syndrome Center Director Dr. Scott Newsome, there might still be light at the end of the tunnel.
"I don't know, for Celine, whether she'll get back to performing like she did in years past. But I think with a combination treatment approach, that gives people the best odds to get back to a higher quality of life, even though it may be different. People can live with this disease," he told Rolling Stone in a statement.
