The Weeknd was pushed aside by Taylor Swift as the No. 1 artist with the most monthly listeners on Spotify for months, following the release of her highly successful re-recorded albums "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" and "1989 (Taylor's Version)."
The "Blinding Lights" singer currently has over 111 million monthly listeners on the music streaming application, while Swift has 110 million.
Some of The Weeknd's biggest hits include "One of the Girls" featuring BLACKPINK's Jennie, "Starboy," "Die For You," "Popular" featuring Playboi Carti and Madonna, and "Blinding Lights."
Netizens were surprised to see the Canadian singer back at No. 1 since he has not released new music in a while, and he was up against the 'Anti-hero" singer, who has been on her "The Eras" tour.
"Alright, The Weeknd, I see you," one wrote.
"On, no. Swifties are coming," another added.
Taylor Swift Rules Over Spotify
For months, Swift ruled over Spotify; she was even crowned as the music streaming platform's Top Global Artist of 2023.
According to reports, the "Cruel Summer" music catalog on Spotify earned more than 26 billion plays from Jan. 1 to November 2023.
One of the major reasons why is due to her "The Eras" tour, and the releases of several albums this year.
There has been renewed interest in Swift and her music since she dropped her 2020 album "Folklore," and she continues to reap its rewards.
The Weeknd, on the other hand, has been focusing on different endeavors. He recently produced the polarizing HBO series, "The Idol."
The Weeknd Steps Away From Music?
Aside from not releasing music for a while, The Weeknd has been a bit paranoid and worried after the release of a leaked song on Spotify.
According to reports, The Weeknd's Spotify was hacked, and the hacker dropped an unreleased song "Trust Issues."
"'Trust Issues' is NOT an official release!" Read a statement reposted by the singer. "The Weeknd's Spotify account was hacked and the hacker released the song 'Trust Issues'️"
The singer rose to prominence following the release of his debut album "Kiss Land" in 2013, but he became mainstream after dropping his sophomore album "Beauty Behind the Madness" in 2015 and 'Starboy" in 2016.
His recent releases, 'After Hours" and "Dawn FM" received critical acclaim and commercial success.
