In a somber turn of events, the world bids farewell to the legendary jazz musician, Les McCann, who passed away at the age of 88. McCann's impact on the music industry was profound, particularly in pioneering the soul-jazz genre. His long-time manager and producer, Alan Abrahams, confirmed the sad news, revealing that McCann had been hospitalized with pneumonia for a week before his demise in Los Angeles on December 29, 2023 according to The New York Times.

McCann's musical legacy is epitomized by his protest track "Compared to What," a 1968 single that launched him into the limelight. Beyond his personal success, McCann's compositions became staples for numerous artists, with samples gracing tracks by the likes of Dr. Dre and A Tribe Called Quest. One of his significant contributions was supporting Roberta Flack, setting up an audition at Atlantic Records that kickstarted her career. The collaboration between the two artists resulted in memorable recordings, and McCann's influence extended to touring with notable acts such as Wilson Pickett, Santana, and the Staples Singers.

Hailing from Lexington, Kentucky, McCann was a self-taught pianist who rose to prominence in the '50s after winning a singing competition during his navy tenure. His breakout moment occurred on The Ed Sullivan Show, where he caught the attention of Quincy Jones and Miles Davis. This exposure paved the way for the release of numerous albums and global tours, with his debut album, "Les McCann Ltd. Plays the Truth," hitting the shelves in 1960. Other notable releases include "Talk to the People" (1972), "Layers" (1973), and "Another Beginning" (1974).

Even in the twilight of his career, McCann remained active. Just last month, Resonance Records unveiled "Never A Dull Moment! - Live from Coast to Coast," featuring recordings from 1966 and 1967. Meanwhile, his final album on Spotify, "Players with Richard 'Groove' Holmes," was released in 2020.

As the music world mourns the loss of Les McCann, his legacy will endure through the timeless melodies that shaped the soul-jazz landscape and influenced generations of musicians.
