Former Scorpions drummer James Kottak has died at the age of 61, multiple news outlets confirmed.

What Was James Kottak's Cause of Death?
The famed drummer died in Kentucky where he was born and lived until 1987. Tobi, however, did not disclose more details about what happened, including his cause of death.

On the other hand, music fans and Kottak's colleagues posted heartfelt tribute messages on X to honor his life and legacy.
Mitch Lafon said, "Former Scorpions drummer James Kottak has passed away. It breaks my heart. I've known James since his Warrant/KrunK days... He was always exceptionally kind and generous to me. Much love & Rest In Peace James."
"I just heard of James Kottak's passing. A good soul, an amazingly talented drummer and was nothing but a gentleman and someone I called my friend and brother. Rest in eternal peace brother James, you will be missed man..." drummer Dean Castronovo wrote.
Queensrÿche added, "Shocked to hear that James Kottak, former drummer of Kingdom Come & Scorpions has passed away. Our sincere condolences to his family, friends and his fans around the world. RIP."

James Kottak's Career Explored
Amid the spotlight, Kottak also struggled with alcoholism, which eventually led to his firing from Scorpions in 2016. The band replaced him with former Motorhead member Mikkey Dee.
In 2022, he admitted he had not been fully able to get rid of alcohol out of his system and life.
His admission resonated with what he told Tulsa Music Stream in April 2023.
"I spent a lot of time not drinking. And then I had my moments when I did drink. And that doesn't mean I'm falling down drunk, walking around with a bottle around the house," he shared.
Before his death, he missed some of Kingdom Come's scheduled shows, citing "health issues."
Throughout his career, Kottak notably worked with other bands and musicians, including Ashba, Warrant, Mister Charlie, Bob Brickley Band and Nut House, to name a few.
