FKA Twigs defends her Calvin Klein ad, which was banned in the United Kingdom for "objectivity women."
"I do not see the 'stereotypical sexual object' that they have labeled me. I see a beautiful strong woman of color whose incredible body has overcome more pain than you can imagine," the singer-songwriter wrote in response to her ad being banned.
FKA Twigs then called out the "double standards" of the UK's Advertising Standards Authority, or ASA: "I am proud of my physicality and hold the art I create with my vessel to the standards of women like Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, and Grace Jones, who broke down barriers of what it looks like to be empowered and harness a unique embodied sensuality.
"Thank you to ck and [photographers] Mert and Marcus, who gave me a space to express myself exactly how I wanted to - I will not have my narrative changed."
FKA Twigs' Calvin Klein Ad Banned in the UK
According to reports, the singer-songwriter was nude, save for a shirt that was strategically draped over her body, in the Calvin Klein ad, which was captioned, "Calvins or nothing."
"[The] image's composition placed viewers' focus on the model's body rather than on the clothing being advertised, adding that the advert "presented [twigs] as a stereotypical sexual object," noted the ASA's critique on the FKA Twigs' ad.
"The images were not vulgar and were of two confident and empowered women who had chosen to identify with the Calvin Klein brand, and the ads contained a progressive and enlightened message," read Calvin Klein's statement in response to the ASA.
FKA Twigs Referencing Jeremy Allen White's Calvin Klein Ad?
The ASA called out the "nudity" in the Calvin Klein ad: "The ad used nudity and centered on FKA twigs' physical features rather than the clothing, to the extent that it presented her as a stereotypical sexual object."
However, the authority did not pose any problems with other Calvin Klein ads, namely the recently released one featuring "The Bear" actor Jeremy Allen White.
Netizens went wild over the White's pictures, which showcased his body as he moved about wearing just underwear.
"Disgrace that they removed this. Reinstate it immediately," a fan wrote about the ad.
"Well said," another added.
"Why can't art be art?"
