Jo Koy surprised fans by revealing he admires Taylor Swift just days after making jokes at her expense during the 2024 Golden Globes.
Reflecting on the controversy, Jo Koy admitted to the Los Angeles Times, "I didn't understand the Taylor [Swift] tiff."
"What hurts the most is me just supporting Taylor; I support her, I love her work. I bought tickets for my nieces. There's no ill intent in that joke."
Jo Koy's Taylor Swift Joke
In his role as the host of the esteemed Golden Globes, the 52-year-old comedian took the opportunity to poke fun at none other than Taylor Swift.
With a mischievous glint, he quipped, "The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift."
However, when the joke fell flat, he quickly added, "Sorry about that."
Despite apologizing, the 12-time Grammy winner wasn't amused by the jab as she glared at him while sipping her drink.
In his conversation with the publication, Jo explicitly stated that his statement aimed to criticize the NFL and not her.
He further elaborated, emphasizing the unique aspect of the Golden Globes that eliminates the need for cutaways solely for ratings.
Days prior, during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he shared a similar sentiment, referring to the NFL cutaways featuring her at games as "adorable."
Taylor's Presence At the NFL
In full knowledge of the varied responses her attendance at NFL games has provoked, the "Lavender Haze" singer stands by her boyfriend Travis Kelce, who plays as a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs.
While her presence at Chiefs' games has undoubtedly attracted a fresh wave of viewers, particular NFL enthusiasts find her mere existence at the stadium excessive, holding her accountable for the team's subpar performance.
Contrary to popular belief, Taylor's accomplishments have gone against the expected outcome.
In her 2023 Time Person of the Year feature, the talented singer-songwriter discussed her presence during NFL games.
She explained, "Within the vast expanse of the stadium, a camera lurks in the distance, its location and timing shrouded in mystery. The uncertainty leaves me wondering if I am being captured on screen multiple times or just a fleeting moment."
Taylor added, "I'm just there to support Travis."
"I have no awareness of if I'm being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads."
