"This Is Spinal Tap" is getting the sequel treatment after 40 years since the first film came out in 1984; it will be led by Rob Reiner once again, along with special appearances from Paul McCartney, Elton John, and others.
According to Loudwire, the iconic fake documentary roped in its entire core creative team and cast, including Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer.
Additionally, the sequel will boast cameo roles from legendary artists like The Beatles member, the "Rocket Man" hitmaker, Questlove, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood.
'This Is Spinal Tap' Cast Eyes Another Tour?
"This Is Spinal Tap" has begun production in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the cast and team have settled into their previously held roles: Guest, McKean, and Shearer will reprise their roles as the comedic metal band Spinal Tap.
Meanwhile, Reiner will return as the documentarian Martin "Marty" DiBergi, Deadline reports.
I recently spoke to Marty DiBergi who said that he was more than happy to take a sabbatical from his position as a visiting Professor's Assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts to once again document Spinal Tap to ensure their place in the pantheon of Rock and Roll," the director said in an interview.
The film was so successful that the trio embarked on a "Spinal Tap" tour; they performed in North America, the Wembley Arena in London, and the Glastonbury Festival.
'This Is Spinal Tap' Changes Pop Culture
The 1984 film is considered a cult classic among film and music enthusiasts, as it is a comedic take on the life of a band during the 1980s.
The Library of Congress deemed "This Is Spinal Tap" "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" in 2002, and, according to Variety, the National Film Registry also selected it for preservation.
As of this writing, there is yet to be a premiere date for the highly anticipated mockumentary; however, netizens have already expressed both their excitement and nervousness about the film.
"I have mixed feelings about this," one wrote.
"Excited and nervous. These guys are fantastic, but it's a tall order!"
"This is the feel-good Monday news I needed. Very excited for this."
On the other hand, some shared their dislike towards the upcoming sequel: "Already sounds horrible."
"This is not good news," another remarked.
"Prediction: terrible."
