Scottish singer Justin Currie revealed his plans after learning about his latest diagnosis.
The Del Amitri lead singer, 59, revealed during his interview on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg program that he always imagined playing until the age of 80. But with his recent health setback, the musician changed the course of his career as he began his battle against the serious condition.
Justin Currie's Diagnosis: What to Know About His Health Battle
According to Currie, he has Parkinson's disease, which he expects to affect his capacity to perform. The same brain condition reportedly made him realize he was not invulnerable, unlike what he had always thought so.
"I can't play the way I would expect to," he shared. "I know it will get worse. At what rate, nobody knows. So I know I'm going to have to stop. The idea is quite grim."
He initially disclosed his diagnosis in his interview with BBC Radio 4's Tremolo program on Sunday.
The "Always The Last To Know" singer spoke about the symptoms he had experienced, including a change in his personality.
Currie continued, "With any form of disability, you become aware of disability in general, and you become acutely aware of that line that disabled people have been saying for years - that there aren't able-bodied people, there are just a lot of people who are not yet disabled."
In addition, his Parkinson's diagnosis had reportedly affected his ability to play the guitar and capacity to hit notes that he had to "relearn" how to sing his band's songs.
For the singer, his current status only dismissed the "ridiculous cliché" of "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
In the end, Currie admitted he would not be stronger for having Parkinson's.
The World Health Organization defines Parkinson's as a health issue that affects one's movement, sleep, mental health and pain. These instances can reduce a patient's quality of life and well-being as the symptoms worsen.
