U2 seems to have figured out how to one-up Beyoncé's stunt from last year, when she released her self-titled album without any marketing or announcements whatsoever. The band gave/forced its new album Songs of Innocence upon anyone with an iTunes account, making it the biggest music giveaway of all time. One thing the band didn't have that Bey did: music videos. Although we still haven't seen a clip supporting any tracks on the new record (outside of the new Apple commercial) the band did drop a "making-of" video via Twitter over the weekend.
What can we learn from the video? Not too much really. One would hope that a "making-of" video would feature footage aside from the band playing in the studio. Maybe some shots of Danger Mouse at work as a producer. Maybe Lykke Li during her studio time (an interview with Bono from Rolling Stone confirms that he and the Swedish songstress interacted).
The again, we suppose ultimately we're complaining about a free video that came on behalf of a free album.
One thing to appreciate from the brief, two-minute clip: Edge playing a Gibson Explorer. Perhaps because of James Hetfield/Metallica, we've always seen the distinctly shaped axe to be a metal man's instrument, so seeing The Edge rock one is tight. Bono's Gretsch hollow-body ain't too bad looking either.
