Life was imitating art after Bruce Spingsteen's Curb Your Enthusiasm storyline became his reality a couple months ago.
Springsteen made a cameo on the penultimate episode of Larry David's beloved HBO comedy series, Asbury Park Press reveals. During the appearance, Springsteen - who played himself - met with David to commend him for a a charitable act he had committed during an earlier episode.
During their meeting, David is informed that Kendra, someone he had slept with while working at NBCUniversal, has transitioned to a man and is now Ken, Sprinsteen's assistant.
After the revelation, their glasses of water were mistakenly swapped, leading the Boss to drink out of the Seinfeld writer's cup. The mix-up led to David giving Springsteen Covid-19, which prompted him to cancel several dates of his sold-out tour.
Once the "Born in the USA" singer publicly blames David for his diagnosis, the concert cancelation becomes headline news. When David sets out to visit Sringsteen's southern California residence, he is shocked when he arrives to see several of his fans rallying outside of the house to support him.
"There's a lot of people out there, yeah, because they thought I was dying from the COVID I caught from you, Mr. Three-Card Monte with the glasses," Springsteen tells David in the scene. "That's how it happened. I lost my sense of smell."
After David dismisses the complaint over his loss of smell because "everything stinks," he heads back to his car to leave the premises. However, once Springsteen's army of fans recognize David, they attack his car after calling him out for being the reason the concerts were canceled.
Springsteen's bout with Covid on the series hit close to home for several real-life fans after he was forced to cancel an appearance in 2023 after testing positive for the illness.
In August, the 73-year-old and his wife, Patti Scialfa, came down with Covid after a New Jersey concert. Once they tested positive for coronavirus, Springsteen and Scialfa canceled their scheduled appearance at Monmouth University for a Jon Stewart-hosted fundraiser.
After making a full recovery, Springsteen completed the second leg of his U.S. tour with the E Street Band. He is slated to embark on another world tour this year, with stops in Las Vegas, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, with international dates including London, Barcelona, and Milan.
After 12 seasons, Curb Your Enthusiasm is wrapping up this week. The final episode of the Larry David-fronted series will premiere on April 7.
