The first weekend of Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was filled with singing, dancing, partying and everything a music fan in the desert could dream of. However, one person who had a not-so-hot start to the back to back weekends of Coachella was singer and producer Grimes.
The Canadian artist played at the Sahara Tent on Saturday night of the festival's opening weekend. However, her set was, in short, a disaster. Some netizens went as far as to dub her performance the "worst in the history of Coachella."
During the show, Grimes began to lose control roughly halfway through her set. Her songs glitched out; she missed transition queues; her backing music began to play at twice the speed it should have.
The Art Angels singer screamed multiple times, expressing her frustration audibly as she tried to wrestle the music back as it continued to fail on her.
She delivered apologies alongside her explanations and excuses.
She told the crowd that what was occurring was "a difficult thing to explain, but we're having a major technical error." She followed up, telling the audience, "Don't judge me for being bad at calculating things." The musician then declared that she is "not good enough at math for this s--."
As the show progressed, Grimes still failed to get the set fully under control.
"All my tracks are double tempo and I can't do the math. They're borderline un-mixable, so the rest of my set won't be mixes, but it'll still be fun," she said to the crowd.
After the performance, Grimes took to X - owned by Elon Musk with whom she shares two children - to apologize for what happened.
She wrote, "I want to apologize for the technical issues with the show tonight. I wanted to come back rly strong and usually I always handle every aspect of my show myself - to save time this was one of the first times I've outsourced essential things like rekordbox bpm's and letting someone else organize the tracks on the sd card etc."
She noted that she "had a bad feeling beforehand" as she had not run through all of the mixes herself. Grimes continued to detail that the experience was a "big lesson" for her. But she guaranteed that "next week will be flawless, everything will run thru my hands."
She punctuated the message with "Plz forgive me! Love, always."
Now, Grimes plans for this upcoming weekend to be a different story. She wrote a promise to her fans and Coachella attendees.
"Whose [sic] ready for Coachella weekend 2? I will cap the disarray at a maximum ten seconds per song - idk if there's ever been a more rehearsed or fine tuned grimes set. And I made another blackpink remix for good measure," she shared.
Grimes will return to the Sahara Tent on Saturday, April 20 for a performance from 7:10 p.m. through 8 p.m.
