Tensions are reportedly running high behind the scenes of American Idol as judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan disagree regarding the choice of a replacement for departing judge Katy Perry on ABC's popular singing competition.

News of Perry's departure from American Idol was made public in February, marking the end of her seven-season run on the show.

Katy Perry Leaving American Idol

In light of Perry's impending departure, tensions are escalating into a fierce battle among the judges, according to insider reports who spoke to Life and Style magazine.

The "I Kissed A Girl" singer disclosed her decision to step down from the panel to focus on her music career.

Following this announcement, rumors about a heated dispute between Bryan and Richie regarding who will take over her spot have been circulating.

"It's turning into a real claw-fest now that [Perry's] leaving. This has been a very stressful time for [Bryan] and [Richie] because they've been left in the dark about so much - there was even talk producers were going to start fresh with a whole new lineup and give them the boot."

The source added, "That hasn't happened, so now the next worry is who will join the show."

"[Bryan] complains that [Richie] is trying to insert one of his favorites and hijack the show. [Bryan] thinks the decision isn't up to them-it's the bosses who should decide-and he's irritated that [Richie] is being so pushy behind the scenes.

Richie previously expressed his desire for a familiar presence on the judges' panel.

He said, " I have my eye on at least two."

Luke Bryan Out?

The source also reveal that Richie has been actively advocating for potential judges such as Diana Ross, Kenny Chesney, and Tim McGraw to the show's producers, hoping they might consider the idea. All of them have formed strong connections in their longstanding collaboration with Lionel.

The source went on to say Bryan believes that reaching a mutual agreement could give Richie an upper hand over him. Despite this, producers reportedly embrace the ongoing arguments.

According to insider information, those in charge view the continuous bickering among them positively. "The higher-ups appear to be unfazed by it," the source added.

Amid rumors of Richie's secret involvement, there were alleged plans in motion by producers to oust Bryan from his position potentially, according to Radar Online.

Rumors circulated about executives advocating for rising country music sensation Jelly Roll to take his place. Informants revealed that Jelly, appointed as a mentor, was being enlisted to "gauge audience response and explore new possibilities."

It's still best to take these reports with a grain of salt.
