Dubbed the "national anthem" of the UK by the legendary Ed Sheeran, this iconic track continues to captivate audiences.

Two decades have passed since The Killers' timeless hit, "Mr. Brightside," emerged, and it just marked a significant milestone this month.

During its initial release in 2003, "Mr. Brightside" debuted with a limited run of 500 CD singles through the independent record label Lizard King in the UK.

The song gained momentum after releasing the hit single "Somebody Told Me" in 2004, reaching Number 3 on the charts. This catapulted Mr. Brightside to its peak position of Number 10 on the Official Singles Chart in May 2004.

Over the past two decades, "Mr. Brightside" has left an enduring legacy on British pop culture after its debut. It has stood the test of time, solidifying its place as the longest-running Top 100 hit in Official Chart history and cementing the band's status as honorary Brits.

In fact, The Killers' new achievement claimed the top spot on the charts, surpassing Oasis' iconic track, "Wonderwall," written by Noel Gallagher.

The Official Charts have verified a significant milestone.

With a total of 5.57 million in combined UK sales and streams (comprising 1.066 million sales and 530,340,000 streams), the Official Charts have officially declared "Mr. Brightside" as surpassing Oasis's "Wonderwall" to claim the title of the UK's most successful song never to hit Number 1.

Notably, "Mr. Brightside" is the third highest-ranking song in UK history when collectively considering sales and streams.

Embraced by new generations in the digital era, it has spent an impressive 408 weeks - nearly eight years - on the Official Singles Chart Top 100. This enduring presence makes it the chart-topper with the longest run in UK Official Chart history.

Despite being released 20 years ago, "Mr. Brightside" continues to attract the British audience, garnering an impressive 1.8 million weekly streams. It has become the UK's third highest-selling and most streamed song ever. The song's popularity shows no signs of waning, as evidenced by its peak performance 2023 with a record-breaking 79.97 million streams.

During its peak week in the UK in July 2019, the song garnered a remarkable 17,700 chart units after the band's electrifying performance at Glastonbury. Similarly, in 2012, "Mr. Brightside" saw its best year in terms of pure sales, being purchased and downloaded 125,200 times.

This comes amid The Killers making their highly-anticipated return to the UK and Ireland this summer with the Rebel Diamonds Tour.
