U2 frontman Bono has some strong opinions on the Grammy-winning band Coldplay.
In a BBC interview podcast, Music Uncovered: The Genius of Coldplay, Bono had good things to say about the band's song "Clocks."
Upon hearing the song, Bono recalled "punching the air in a manly but not aggressive way," saying, "Oh, this is just better than anyone else's song at the moment."
"It just sort of sticks to you, tighter than time itself," he added. "I should mention Coldplay are not a rock band. I hope that's obvious. There is something much more interesting going on there, like the Isley Brothers or something," he explained, adding that they "should not be judged by rock rules.
According to Bono, Coldplay's music differs from that of other rock bands. It has a "different source," which can be best exemplified in their song "Clocks."
"Rage is the river running under most rock formations," Bono added.
Coldplay's "Clocks" is one of their most popular songs, and various publications hailed it as one of the greatest songs of the 2000s. It is the third single from their 2002 album, A Rush of Blood to the Head.
The song won a Grammy for Record of the Year at the 2004 Grammy Awards, and it has since been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
While Coldplay's expansive discography is bustling with iconic tracks like "Viva La Vida," "Yellow," "Fix You," and "The Scientist," the band has announced that they would stop making music in 2025.
"Well I know I can tell you, our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour," Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin revealed to BBC in December 2021. "Maybe we'll do some collaborative things, but the Coldplay catalog, as it were, finishes then."
Having released Music of the Spheres in 2021, the band's ninth studio album, Martin shared with NME that they plan to release 12 albums in total.
"We're going to make 12 albums. Because it's a lot to pour everything into making them. I love it and it's amazing, but it's very intense too. I feel like because I know that challenge is finite, making this music doesn't feel difficult, it feels like, 'This is what we're supposed to be doing,'" he confirmed in October 2021
