Charlie Puth is about to release his most vulnerable song yet, with a little help from Taylor Swift.
The "See You Again" singer is releasing his new song, "HERO," on May 24. It is set to tackle difficult subjects, involving watching someone you love "hurting themselves" and sabotaging their own lifes. With the hopeless feeling of not being able to save them, Puth says the track is the hardest he has ever written.
"My new song 'HERO' is about when you see someone you love hurting themselves, ruining the things in their life that are good, but you just can't save them. It's one of the hardest songs I've ever had to write, but I wrote it hoping that you've gone through something similar in your life, and that it can fill in the BLANK for you like it did for me," he wrote in his social media announcement.
Later on in the post, Puth went on to thank Taylor Swift for encouraging him to drop the single. He states that she let him know through her own releases that the song was worthy enough to drop.
"I've never put out a song like this before- it's very different for me, but I want to thank @taylorswift for letting me know musically that I just couldn't keep this on my hard drive any longer."
Swift gave Puth a shoutout on the title track of her recent album, The Tortured Poets Department. In the second verse of the song, she sings: "You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate / We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist."
In the past, the Grammy-nominee has hailed the "Fortnight" singer as a "genius." He did not give an in-depth response to his shoutout on "The Tortured Poets Department," but using Swift as the inspiration for his new song could be his way of publicly thanking her.
"HERO" is set to be the lead single of Puth's new album. While the title and release date for the record are currently under wraps, he says that the first track is an accurate representation of what is to come from the future.
"I'm very excited to share my next album with you, especially this song because it's a great representation of what's to come," he shared. "Thank you to all of my fans- you'll never know how much you mean to me..."
Swift has frequently tackled similarly vulnerable subjects in her music. Her most recent album touched on feelings of depression and alcoholism, while one song on her new LP reveals that her partner had thoughts of suicide at the idea of them breaking up.
Charlie Puth's new album will be his first full-length drop since his 2022 self-titled LP. The record featured hit singles like "Light Switch" and "Left and Right."
