Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson made a rare public appearance on Tuesday (May 21) night at a screening of the new Frank Marshall/Thom Zimny-directed documentary The Beach Boys at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, according to social media posts shared by his daughter, Carnie Wilson.
Carnie Wilson, who was a pop star herself in the '90s trio Wilson Phillips along with her sister Wendy Wilson and Chynna Phillips, shared a trio of posts about her father and the screening.
"I sat in back of my Daddy @brianwilsonlive tonight as we watched the new documentary about The Beach Boys @disneyplus I saw him watching himself and had to take this picture because it was blowing my mind to see him watch his history. I am proud of all The Beach Boys for their talent and gifts they've given to the world. I love you Daddy and I'm honored to be your daughter," she posted, along with a heart emoji.
The caption accompanied a photo of a young Brian Wilson on the screen in black-and-white and a silhouette of his head watching the film in the darkened theater.
Carnie Wilson also shared a photo of Brian Wilson, seated in a wheelchair, and her mother and his ex-wife Marilyn Wilson Rutherford.
"Nothing touches my heart more than to see my Mom and Dad tell each other they love each other. Tonight they got to do that. They've been divorced for years and my Mom has a wonderful husband Daniel... but they are my parents forever and these moments make life extra won-won- wonderful," she wrote along with some heart emojis.
Brian and Marilyn Wilson divorced in 1979. Brian Wilson married his second wife, Melinda Ledbetter, who is often credited with providing a stable foundation for Wilson in wake of his split from his controversial psychologist and business partner Eugene Landy, in 1995. Ledbetter died on Jan. 30. After her death, Brian Wilson wrote on social media posts that she "was my savior. She gave me the emotional security I needed to have a career. She encouraged me to make the music that was closer to my heart".
The third photo Carnie Wilson shared featured Beach Boys veteran Al Jardine and Marilyn Wilson Rutherford.
In a recent interview with Music Times' Lyndsey Parker, Jardine expressed regret that the Beach Boys did not reunite in 2023.
Earlier this month, Brian Wilson was put under a court-ordered conservatorship on May 9 that will be overseen by his manager/publicist Jean Sievers and his business manager LeeAnn Hard, according to Rolling Stone.
In a petition that was filed in February, Wilson's representatives revealed that the Beach Boys mastermind, 81, is suffering from dementia.
In granting the petition, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Gus T. May found that Wilson is suffering from a "major neurocognitive disorder" and needs assistance, according to the report.
In a change from the original petition, the judge added a late addendum at the request of an attorney working for Wilson's two oldest daughters -- Carnie Wilson Bonfiglio and Wendy Wilson Knutson.
The Beach Boys premieres Friday (May 24) on Disney+.
