Just one month after No Doubt's triumphant reunion at Coachella, all four No Doubt members reunited in another way, at Inglewood’s YouTube Theater on Sunday, May 26 (which was declared “Madness Day” by L.A. Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez) to take in the first L.A. show since 2012 by seminal second-wave ska band Madness.
Also attending, as seen in joyful backstage group photos on Madness's social media, were No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani's husband, Blake Shelton. Gwen's two younger sons with ex-husband Gavin Rossdale, Zuma and Apollo, and her brother, No Doubt founder and former member Eric Stefani, also attended.
Suggs, Madness's amiable lead singer, gave No Doubt a shout-out from the YouTube Theater stage, sweetly announcing that No Doubt were in the house and joking that they were "just a twinkle in their granddads' eye" when Madness first toured America 40 years ago.
Speaking to Music Times six days after No Doubt's rocksteady Coachella return — where they'd played the Madness version of Prince Buster's "One Step Beyond" — bassist Tony Kanal said, "We grew up with Madness, the English Beat, the Specials, the Selector, the Bodysnatchers... all of those English bands were so influential on us. To be able to talk about them and make kids aware of how influential they were to us, I do feel that's such a great opportunity. I always try to do that... if it turns the younger generation on to these incredible bands that helped form our band, that's great! We wouldn't be our band without those bands."

It remains to be seen if No Doubt will reunite on an actual stage again. Stefani currently has two solo festival shows on the books (June 30 at Vancouver Island's Laketown Shaketown, and Sept. 18 at Alabama's South Star Music Festival) and is returning to The Voice in the fall; Kanal, No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont, and No Doubt drummer Adrian Young recently played Pasadena's Cruel World festival with their reunited, Davey Havok-fronted supergroup, Dreamcar; and Kanal is also focused on his budding career as a film and television composer. Kanal told Music Times in April, "[No Doubt] haven't discussed anything in the future, but I will say the energy and vibes and everything have been so positive that I think there's going to be some discussions."
Maybe when and if No Doubt do play together again, they can cover Madness's version of Labi Siffre's "It Must Be Love." Madness's full YouTube Theater setlist is below.
