Over the past few years, many fans have celebrated Nickelback because of the classical music that they constantly deliver to fans. However, around the time they amassed massive success, the public didn't know that several things had happened to the group behind closed doors; let's take a closer look at the band's unfortunate experiences.
Frontman Chad Kroeger's life didn't start the way other people did. He had a rough childhood. Growing up in the small town of Hanna, Alberta, the musician was raised by his mother and stepfather.
When he was still a minor, he was convicted on a charge of breaking into his junior high, which led him to spend two months in a juvenile detention facility.
As reported by Grunge, Kroeger previously said that had he not delved into the world of music, he might've fallen into the rabbit hole of the drug trade, saying, "I'd probably be in jail."
Fast-forward to 2002, when Nickelback took the stage of the Ilha do Ermal festival in Portugal. The band didn't get the reaction that they were expecting from the crowd because instead of being greeted with many cheers, they faced several rocks and bottles thrown at them.
It all started when the frontman asked the crowd if they had fans in the country, to which the audience responded violently.
"Do you want to hear some rock n' roll, or do you want to go home?" Kroeger asked the crowd, later saying, "See ya," before the group left the stage while playing their second song.
In 2015, the band hit rock bottom, especially Kroeger, as he was diagnosed with a vocal cord cyst, which could potentially affect his singing.
The musician immediately agreed to undergo an operation to remove the cyst, but this left the band out of commission for almost a year. With his situation at the time, the group had no choice but to cancel their shows in North America and Europe.
Following the operation, the singer was advised by doctors to take a vocal rest for nine months.
"I was a little worried, but I was in really good hands. You never know how you're going to sound or what's going to happen or if you're never going to be able to sing again," he said in an interview with FaceCulture.
Today, the band is still standing and performing in cities around the world. Check out Nickelback's upcoming shows for 2024 on their official website.
