Snoop Dogg has been accused of copyright infringement by an animator whose work he reposted on his Instagram account.

Radar Online reported that Snoop Dogg was sued by Bradford Perry, the animator who created the viral TikTok video depicting "how many animals humans eat every year."

The conflict arose because Perry had registered his work with the United States Copyright Office, making him the "sole owner of the exclusive rights in the Subject Video."

The lawsuit was filed earlier this year and has since been proceeding in the United States District Court of California.

In the June 3, 2024 filing, Snoop Dogg revealed that they have "not yet exchanged information necessary for an early settlement."

Perry wanted Snoop Dogg to pay him for "statutory damages up to $30,000 per work infringed subject to a timely copyright registration or up to $150,000" for infringing Perry's work.

The animator also stated in his filing that he wants Snoop Dogg to pay his legal fees, including other costs related to the complaint and any other fees that the court deems appropriate.

Snoop Dogg "published and displayed the Subject Video on his TikTok account via his handle' @snoopdogg,' without Plaintiff's authorization or consent," Perry argued in the filing, noting that Snoop Dogg's repost was "willful."

Perry added that the "Drop It Like Its Hot" rapper "knew or reasonably should have known that 3-D artwork is protected by copyright, and thus it was at a minimum reckless for Defendant to use the Subject Video without securing a license or permission to do so."

However, Snoop Dogg's camp retaliated, saying that the "fair use" doctrine protected any use of Perry's work. They asserted that Snoop Dogg immediately deleted the post after receiving a takedown notice, demonstrating his "good faith."

Reportedly, settlement isn't on the table yet. However, the court has already set a trial for Perry should both parties not come to a mutual agreement. The two opposing parties have to come up with a decision by March 7, 2025; if not, they're scheduled for a tentative trial on April 22, 2025.
