Joe Alwyn denied that he's a patron of the Black Dog pub in Vauxhall in London. This came months after intensified speculation that Alwyn was the subject of his ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift's, new song, "The Black Dog."
Alwyn opened up to The Sunday Times about his life since his high-profile breakup with Swift in April 2023. According to the actor, he has "never been" to Vauxhall. The Black Dog pub that Swift referred to in the song is located at 112 Vauxhall Walk in London.
The topic came up when Alwyn talked about his favorite things to do during his breaks, which only included "seeing friends, traveling, going to the pub" - sadly, going to that pub wasn't something he did.
However, the publication suggested that despite Alwyn's denial, he was reportedly "smiling a smile that hints that there is more to say."
Since Swift's The Tortured Poets Department hit streaming and record stores, Swifties have speculated that it was Alwyn who "walk[ed] into some bar called The Black Dog" to "pierce new holes in [her] heart."
Immediately after, the restaurant gained more customers and started selling Swift-related merchandise.
Speaking to Sky News, The Black Dog owner Lily Bottomley confirmed they "have a certain blond regular who frequents" the shop. Looking back at Swift's roster of ex-boyfriends who live in London, Alwyn is the only one with blonde hair.
Bottomley also described to BBC News the "overwhelmingly positive" reactions to their business since the album dropped.
She also revealed that Swift had already visited the pub, which has since been serving menu items inspired by the singer.
"We're just loving it, it's been so fun. All of the attention has been pretty overwhelming but we can't be happier," Bottomley added.
In the Sunday Times interview, Alwyn subtly and indirectly addressed questions and speculations about his breakup with Swift.
"I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years," Alwyn said about the split. "That is a hard thing to navigate. What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that, one week later, it's suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in."
