Jane Fonda warned Jennifer Lopez about being public about her relationship with Ben Affleck, and the singer-actress' decision not to follow the advice backfired.
Before the release of Lopez's This Is Me Now: A Love Story, the "Dance Again" singer reportedly reached out to Jane Fonda and had her appear in the film. Her former Monster In Law costar issued a warning while working on it, but it did not shake Lopez's desire to make her relationship private.
Although Fonda accepted the offer to appear in the film, the Klute actress contacted Lopez's manager, Benny Medina, to inform him of her concerns.
"I believe that everyone in the entire world is pulling for this relationship and this love," Fonda reportedly told Medina, according to Variety. "And the idea of how you present that is so sacrosanct, so important. It should be handled in a way that you aren't overly flaunting it, so much so that it creates any form of criticism or resentment."
Lopez and Fonda's conversation was included in the documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told - which also shared information about the Bennifer's marriage. Fonda told Lopez how the film could damage the latter's new marriage and how flaunting it could affect the romance.
"I want you to know that I don't entirely know why, but I feel invested in you and Ben, and I really want this to work," Fonda said. "However, this is my concern. Like, it feels too much like you're trying to prove something instead of just living it. You know, every other photograph is the two of you kissing and the two of you hugging."
The "Let's Get Loud" singer defended herself and said the behavior was not for show.
After shrugging off Fonda's advice, Lopez started suffering big time in the relationship she and Affleck sparked divorce rumors.
From being an open book, the "Love Don't Cost a Thing" singer surprisingly dodged media questions about their marriage and rumored divorce. She also refused to share more details, which was far from what she usually did in the past.
Even the Justice League star repeatedly expressed his desire to keep their marriage private.
