Christopher Owens has returned with "I Think About Heaven," his first new song in seven years.
The former Girls frontman released "I Think About Heaven," a solo track about self-reliance and desire, on Tuesday along with an artwork showing him posing outside Los Angeles' Wolf's Lair Castle, which was the home of the late actress Shelley Duvall.
The image of Owens was captured by his longtime collaborator Sandy Kim, according to Our Culture magazine.
Owens' new single marks his first music release since the 2017 EP "Vante," which he co-wrote with bassist Luke Baće and drummer Cody Rhodes as the band Curls.
In the new track, the singer contemplates some of life's biggest questions and finally finds comfort in heaven.
"I think about heaven, and I smile / I think about heaven, and I break into a big grin," Owens sings peacefully.
Owens, who grew up in a traveling religious community, has previously used music to explore religion.
He made a clear allusion to Psalms 42 in "I Think About Heaven," singing, "As the heart panteth after the water brooks / in this way my soul searches for your love."
After a motorbike accident that left him paralyzed, struggles with homelessness, and the passing of his former Girls bandmate Chet "JR" White in 2020, Owens turned to music for solace.
In a press release, Owens referred to songwriting as his "constant companion."
Fans on YouTube, where Owens shared "I Think About Heaven," had nothing but praise for the artist and his new track.
"Wow, what a song!!" one commented.
"[I] can't wait for what's to come next! Pumped to hear more Christopher Owens. Truly one of the best," another wrote in the comments section of his video.
A third user wrote, "So stoked to have you back! Great track."
Following his 2012 announcement that he was leaving Girls, Owens dropped several solo albums. The first, "Lysandre," came out in 2013, and he quickly followed it up with a free acoustic version. His second solo album, "A New Testament," was released in 2014.
"Chrissybaby Forever," his most recent solo album, was released in 2015.
NME gave "Chrissybaby Forever" a four-star review, describing Owens as "a naturally intuitive pop songwriter" and the song as a "fresh slice of Californian good vibrations that arrives just in time for summer."
