Trumpet Player Rashawn Ross Shares Final Email From Longtime Dave Matthews Band Saxophonist LeRoi Moore

In his final email to Rashawn Ross, longtime Dave Matthews Band sax player LeRoi Moore sent a few insightful and funny quotes from famous musicians to brighten up his bandmate's day.

Ross shared the email recently via Twitter, telling fans, "Came across the last email I got from LeRoi. 3am on the phone laughing while going thru them all. Miss those moments."

The email is a collection of quotes from musicians talking about being musicians. An especially personalized one is by jazz pioneer Dizzy Gillespie about playing the trumpet. "Some days you get up and put the horn to your chops and it sounds pretty good and you win. Some days you try and nothing works and the horn wins. This goes on and on and then you die and the horn wins." Check out the entire list below.

Moore was one of the founding members of DMB in the early '90s and died in 2008 as a result of an ATV accident. Jambands.com reports that Moore was instrumental in getting Ross to join the band in 2007. Bassist Stefan Lessard even told Ultimate Rock Guitar that Moore had a vision of a full horn section within DMB. "That was sort of an extension of LeRoi's idea," Lessard said. "It was where he was leading the band and the sound of what we were trying to do."

DMB's first studio effort without Moore, 2009's Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, stands as a tribute to the fallen saxophonist. "Big Whiskey, though, is a lot like a New Orleans funeral parade — mourning and zest balled into big, brawny music," Rolling Stone's David Fricke wrote. "'We'll be drinking big whiskey while we dance and sing,' Matthews crows in 'Why I Am.' 'And when my story ends, it's gonna end with him/Heaven or hell/I'm going down with the GrooGrux King.' I'm betting on heaven - and that Moore will be quietly waiting for him."
