Indiana rapper Freddie Gibbs was shot at early this morning, Nov. 4, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the New York Post reports. The 32-year-old rapper had just finished a performance at Rough Trade Records around 1 a.m. when a gunman ran up to his SUV and fired several shots. Gibbs was unhurt, though two people in his entourage received non-life threatening wounds, with one being hit in the hand and one in the leg, and are in stable condition.
Following the shooting, Gibbs reportedly ran back to Rough Trade and spotted the gunman fleeing the crime scene. He has not yet been identified or arrested.
"They tried to kill Tupac. They tried to kill me," Gibbs told the Post outside Rough Trade. "I'm still alive."
When asked why someone would want to kill him, Gibbs replied, "I"m Freddie Gibbs. They tried to kill me, but I'm still alive."
According to police, the gunman was spotted on security cameras inside Rough Trade over the course of the night, attempting to blend in with Gibbs's entourage.
"At one point, [the shooter] was standing right next to [Gibbs]," an investigator said. "The opportunity was there if he wanted to shoot."
It is likely the shooter was holding a gun while inside the club, as Rough Trade has no metal detectors.
Gibbs posted a photo on his Instagram account to assure fans that he had been unhurt in the attack — "Still Livin," he wrote — which you can check out here:
Gibbs's most recent studio album Pinata, a collaboration with Madlib, was released in March. Three singles were released from the album: "Thuggin," "Shame" featuring BJ the Chicago Kid and "Deeper." His most recent solo studio album ESGN (Evil Seeds Grows Naturally) was released in June 2013.
