The Band Perry paid tribute to the great Glen Campbell with a rendition of his 1967 tear-jerker "Gentle on My Mind."
Everyone inside Nashville's Bridgestone Arena could feel the emotional weight of the performance, most of it stemming from the group's excellent take on the song. "I still might run in silence tears of joy might stain my face," Kimberly Perry sings in the video below. "And the summer sun might burn me 'til I'm blind/But not to where I cannot see you walkin' on the backroads/By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind."
The trio previously recorded "Gentle on My Mind" for the documentary about Campbell's final tour and struggle with Alzheimer's disease titled I'll Be Me. The legendary musician received his diagnosis at the beginning of 2011, before launching into a goodbye tour that would last until November 2012.
"I was afraid of Alzheimer's," Campbell's wife, Kim Woolen, said. "When we got the diagnosis it scared me. I didn't know what to expect. I think a lot of people want to hide the fact that you have Alzheimer's. We just felt like Glen was doing really good and we just wanted to keep living our lives and celebrate being together. If you don't have anything to hide, you're not worried."
The Rhinestone Cowboy released the final song of his career last month with "I'm Not Gonna Miss You," also from the documentary's soundtrack. The tune is a brutally beautiful love letter to his friends and family, and it takes on the disease the only way Campbell knows how - through words and music.
Campbell was taken to a full-time treatment facility in April.
