Last night during the Mercury Prize awards ceremony, David Bowie premiered a video for James Murphy's remix of "Love is Lost."
The video, which a press release called, "strangely moving Gothic inflected story line perfect for Halloween," features Bowie dressed as a creepy warlock playing with puppets in his home.
It begins with un-costumed Bowie washing his hands while a creepy doll watches him from the closet. It flashes to clips of clapping hands. The warlock version of him, which appears to be sculpture with Bowie's facial features projected on to it, sits in a dark room while a Bowie look-alike puppet watches eerily in the background.
According to Rolling Stone, Bowie made the video himself last weekend for $12.99 (the cost of the thumb drive on which the video was transferred). It was written, shot and edited by him in his Manhattan office. The puppets in the video are allegedly from "his legendary archive."
The Murphy remix of "Love Is Lost" is featured with another remix and five new studio tracks on The Next Day Extra, due out Nov. 5. The album is an expanded version of the album Bowie released in March, The Next Day and will include a DVD featuring the four music videos that have been released in support of the effort.
