Does Metallica have the best of taste in music? That depends on a lot of factors but mainly your personal taste. One thing that this writer will certainly salute about the group, regardless of the band's era of music: Its taste in hockey franchises. The band recently posted a photo of frontman James Hetfield posing in a San Jose Sharks jersey with defenseman Brent Burns and now the group will be taking part in Metallica Night on January 21 at the SAP Center.
"As some of you may know, we have been long supporters of the Sharks going back to the mid-90′s when the team moved permanently to San Jose," the band said in a statement (from Loudwire). "Over the years we've made many treks down to the Shark Tank. So it's actually pretty fitting that we finally connect with the team for a night of metal and hockey and we want you to come along and partake of the festivities with us."
The band seems to suggest that it will perform "Seek and Destroy" (although the obvious choice would have been "Trapped Under Ice"...duh) and other hockey game shenanigans, including the ceremonial puck drop. Fans in attendance will get a souvenir T-shirt (pictured below).
This will be Metallica's second "Metallica Night" hosted by a professional sports team during 2014. The band appeared at AT&T Park with the San Francisco Giants for another honorary night during May. The theme of course is that the band supports teams in the Bay Area, which also leaves a lot of options. We'll wait to see if the Golden State Warriors come knocking on behalf of the NBA but the NFL could get sticky: Slayer is a notorious pro-Oakland Raider outfit, so will Kerry King take issue with the band playing at his team's field? Or will he be more affronted if they play across the pond at the 49ers Levi's Stadium? Politics.
Editor's Note: Writer Ryan Book is a die-hard San Jose Sharks fans, for reasons we're not entirely sure of. He's from Ohio.
