Straight Outta Compton, the new biopic about rap group N.W.A. will hit theaters this summer, but you can see a leak of the trailer now. Ice Cube, a founding member of the group and an executive producer on the film, recently debut the movie's first trailer during a gig in Australia. A fan happened to get it on video, and it's now surfaced on the web.
The trailer opens with the voice of a man (possibly manager Jerry Heller) talking to the group over footage of Compton and dialogue among the characters.
"I can tell you what I see here: a lot of raw talent, swagger, vibrato. People are scared of you guys. They think you're dangerous. But you have a unique voice. The world needs to hear it."
The film stars O'Shea Jackson Jr. playing his father Ice Cube, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, and Paul Giamatti as the group's manager Jerry Heller.
Back in October, Cube stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to talk about how excited he was for the film.
"My son is in it, he plays me in the movie, so I'm extremely proud of that, that's cool," Cube said, before being asked if the 22 year old had to audition for the part of his father. "Hell yeah. He had to win the part. I ain't giving up nothing free."
The film hasn't been without controversy, however.
Back in August, TMZ reported that a drive-by shooting occurred right in front of the film crew, and a nearby civilian was hit by a bullet but survived.
Earlier this year, the project criticized for a seemingly racist casting call, in which the movie's producers were searching for "A" girls (all races, "hottest of the hottest"), "B" girls ("light-skinned"), "C" girls ("African American girls ... with a weave") and "D" girls ("African American girls ... Poor, not in good shape").
The movie gets its name from N.W.A's 1988 debut album, a landmark record that brought gangsta rap into the mainstream.
Straight Outta Compton hits theaters Aug. 14, 2015.
