In the last few weeks, it seems like most of our attention has been focused overseas when it comes to news. The massacre in France, the terrorist roundup in Belgium that prevented a new rash of terrorist attacks and al-Qaida in Yemen's involvement has dominated newscasts, momentarily making the U.S. forget that things happen here, too. At least, until late last night when a drive-by shooting occurred near Vice President Joe Biden's Delaware home. Luckily, he and his wife were not home at the time, but they have been fully briefed on what could have easily been a deadly incident.
The Secret Service and New Castle County Police are currently investigating the situation, which according to the Associated Press began shortly before 8:30 p.m. last night, Jan. 17.
Secret Service spokesman Robert Hoback said the shots were fired at around 8:25 p.m. on a public road outside the secure perimeter near the home in Greenville, Delaware, according to AOL. The shots were heard by Secret Service personnel, who saw the vehicle drive past the home at a high rate of speed and flee the scene.
The Secret Service said about 30 minutes later, an individual in a vehicle tried to pass a New Castle County police officer securing the outer perimeter of the area. That person was arrested for resisting arrest and will be questioned regarding the shooting to determine if he was involved, said AOL.
Biden's home is several hundred yards from the main road where the shots were fired. Authorities were searching outside the Biden residence and nearby homes to determine if any rounds struck the home, reported AOL.
While it is momentarily surprising to think that anyone could get that close to the Biden's home, let's think back to the lousy job the Secret Service has done in protecting the White House in recent months. Taking that into consideration, it is probably not that surprising after all that someone got too close. But who?
Do you think this will end up being a random person who is disillusioned by our government or will it have links to terrorism stemming from the Middle East? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.
