The last six months of Jennifer Aniston's life must feel like a total dream to the actress. She has done loads of media to promote a couple different projects and in those interviews has emerged a strong and content woman. She also has made huge leaps in her career by taking on the role of a chronic pain sufferer in the indie flick Cake. The low-budget film has helped the actress rack up best-actress nominations during award season, but in its first week out it kind of bombing at the box office. This despite it having generated Oscar buzz.
The film, which also features Sam Worthington and Anna Kendrick, finished in 19th place, earning $916,179 on 482 screens, averaging $1,901 per screen. Granted, Cake was up against American Sniper, which completely shattered box-office records, but you know producers were hoping for a better showing. It does seem like this is the kind of film that may not pull people in to theaters, but then again everyone will check it out on Netflix once it is released on VOD.
Aniston has always called this film a labor of love and the kind of project that she got involved with because of the story and not the potential price tag attached to it. It also has really benefited her in the grander scheme of things.
Aniston has said that she plans to continue taking riskier roles now that she has garnered some respect from the industry. She is no longer going to be dubbed a rom-com actress, and that was a stereotype that she has spent years trying to break out of.
