While everyone is still discussing the Kanye West and Beck controversy at the Grammys, Kendrick Lamar decided to celebrate his two wins for "i" but unveiling the second single "The Blacker The Berry" from his still untitled sophomore album. It is a good think Kendrick released this the day after the Grammys because he hold nothing back in bringing back out the guns to fire back at some of his detractors over the past few months.
The tune comes just in time for Black History Month, as K.Dot references in his final verse "Celebrate February like its my b-day", addressing the many issues that face African-Americans in the United States through his lense with uncannily powerful rhymes and punchlines.
So don't matter how much I say I like to preach with the Panthers
Or tell Georgia State "Marcus Garvey got all the answers"
Or try to celebrate February like it's my B-Day
Or jump high enough to get Michael Jordan endorsements
Or watch BET cause urban support is important
So why did I weep when Trayvon Martin was in the street?
When gang banging make me kill a n***a blacker than me?
Hypocrite!
The hook references one of his idol, Tupac Shakur's song "Keep Ya Head Up." The song has production from OVO member, Boi-1da, with additional work from Terrace Martin.
For those who were unhappy with the cheery and upbeat nature of "i" this new track will be for you. It is quite the opposite with a dark, self-deprecating tone from K. Dot.
According to a now deleted twitter from Empire star Taraji P Henson via Nah Right, the album is potentially finished since she claims to have chosen her favorite from the album. Listen to the song below via Top Dog Entertainment and get ready for something special from K.Dot in 2015.
