Foo Fighters have confirmed that they will be headlining the Friday night of Glastonbury. They made the announcement during their NME award acceptance speech for Best International Band. The band was unable to attend the NME Awards ceremony in person, but Dave Grohl and company sent a video acceptance speech instead.
"We're very thankful and very happy. Sorry we couldn't make it tonight, but we will be seeing you over the summer at some big outdoor festival that nobody knows we're playing. It's Glastonbury. So we'll see you at Glastonbury. Thanks a lot everybody," Grohl said in his speech.
According to the BBC, Glastonbury co-organizer Emily Eavis was present at the award ceremony and commented on the band saying, "[Foo Fighters] are one of the greatest live bands on the planet. They're just incredible. I mean Dave Grohl just ignites the field and will do something phenomenal. You so rely on those incredible live bands to take you somewhere else."
This announcement is a longtime coming. Back in November, Grohl revealed that he would like to play the festival.
"I mean, it's an iconic festival," the frontman told NME. "I just tell everyone if they need a band, we're pretty good. They should give us a call. See what happens."
Co-organizer Eavis then told NME that they'd "love to have the Foo Fighters back at Glastonbury and they haven't played since 1998, so it's well overdue! We'll have to see."
Despite Eavis comments, Grohl said as of Nov. 12 that they hadn't received a call.
"I have not gotten the call yet," he said. "The Foo Fighers haven't been there since 1998, so er... that's a fun festival."
Good thing that call eventually came.
However, if you want to see them play Glastonbury but haven't purchased tickets, you're probably out of luck as the festival sold out way back in October. Although it's possible that more tickets will become available after the cancellation period is up in April.
Other confirmed acts for the 2015 lineup include Lionel Richie and the Dalai Lama with Mavis Staples rumored as well. The full lineup will be announced in the spring.
