Antony Hegarty of Antony and The Johnsons fame announced a new album for 2015 although it won't be under the name of her established act. The album, Hopelessness, will be released by Hegarty under the alias ANOHNI, according to a Facebook post from the performer. Hudson Mohawke and Oneohtrix Point Never will join the vocalist in producing the album, according to Digital Spy.
As the latter two collaborators may have indicated, the project will take a more electronic approach than Antony and The Johnsons' usual chamber pop approach. Hegarty described it in her post as "electronic music with some teeth."
The announcement certainly has to bring the fate of The Johnsons into question, although many continue to report this as a new project from the group (it isn't). Hegarty was always the driving creative force behind the band's music but it hasn't released an album since 2010's Swanlights. The band also released an album during 2009 but that came four years after 2005's Mercury Prize winning record I Am A Bird Now. So who knows? Perhaps Hegarty is just waxing creative a bit before reassembling her main source of income.
Hegarty describe ANOHNI as currently in production but we didn't get a date as to when we can expect new music to appear. The last we've heard from her was when she teamed up with Yoko Ono for a new version of the latter's 1985 song "I Love You Earth." The recording was to celebrate Ono's 82nd birthday.
Stay tuned for more details on ANOHNI.
