Earlier this week Music Times reported that Run The Jewels was attacked onstage while it played the pair's first performance at South by Southwest. Now news has come out that emcee Killer Mike was indeed injured during the assault, which didn't immediately come out because Mike had continued along with the show, alongside his pal El-P. Mike has apparently suffered a torn rotator cuff in the moment.
He flew back to his hometown of Atlanta immediately following the show, to get the damage better diagnosed by a doctor. The medical man suggested that the rapper wear a cast, something that Mike wasn't having.
"I was like, 'Doctor, I'm not leaving the road,'" he said, according to Pitchfork. "The tour goes on!"
He returned to Austin and came back for another show, at Stubb's. El-P noted that the attack had occurred right before the group leapt into its track "Banana Clipper." He reminded the crowd to behave before they performed it this time.
"Last time we did this song, it was interrupted. Let's not let that happen again," he said, before Mike added, "If you interrupt this song, we'll beat the f*ck out of you."
The incident occurred when a man jumped onstage and attempted to attack the group, later claiming that he believed the duo had stolen lyrics from him and he was owed money accordingly. Once he was repelled from the stage, the man apparently began fighting with audience members as well. Once he was kicked out of the venue, promoter Matt Sonzala claimed that police in the area stated they couldn't arrest the man (who remains unidentified). According to Sonzala, the man walked around a corner and began talking to himself.
"Was told that dude who attacked Run the Jewels is walking around downtown Austin talking to himself," Sonzala tweeted. "No he wasnt arrested... Be safe yall. If youre in Austin keep your eyes open."
