Following his SXSW performance Thursday, March, 19, Vibe caught up with A$AP Rocky and discussed recording his new album A.L.L.A. Rocky also talked about his late friend A$AP Yams.
While on stage, Rocky appeared elated as he rocked the crowd with Ferg, Twelvy, Nast, Ant, Illz and Bari at his side, but after the show, the reality of Yams's absence kicked in.
"Man, it's weird ... it's a blessing ... I'm speechless," Rocky said. "I'm at a loss for words ... I wish Yams was here."
The conversation then shifted to Rocky's new album and the work he put into his forthcoming sophomore release.
"A.L.L.A. -- it stands for the title of my album. I just don't want to give out the title yet. The A.L.L.A. is because I was named after the God MC himself, Rakim Allah. And, I'm just basically saying it's a return of the real s**t," he told Vibe. "I'm not here to swag it out. I ain't here catwalk it. I'm here to just do me and if y'all don't like my s**t,- f**k it. I'm on me so hard right now. I'm making music and experimenting, making sounds that I never even knew existed. Not to make it sound like this album is going to be a circus in a box or something. But I really pushed myself this time. I secluded myself [for] six months. In another country with the phones off."
The "Multiply" rapper went into detail about keeping myself secluded and credited Red Bull for letting him use their recording studios in private.
"It was like discipline. Yams was in rehab [and] I was in London -- recorded this s**t. When he got out, we came back out to the States, then we went back out to London for like two more months, we toured with the Mob, did the Red Bull Culture Clash."
Earlier this week, A$AP Yams's official cause of death was revealed. He reportedly overdosed on an acute mixed drug intoxication. Opiates and benzodiazepine were found in his system and his death was ruled an accident.
The 26-year-old, credited as the mastermind behind A$AP Mob, was found unresponsive in his Brooklyn apartment on the morning of Jan. 18.
