ASAP Rocky Recalls Night Of Yams' Death From Drug Overdose: "I Just Miss Him"

Last week, a drug overdose was revealed to have been the cause of A$AP Yam's untimely death. The A$AP Mob founder overdosed on an acute mixed drug intoxication with both opiates and benzodiazepine were found in his system. The death was ruled an accident. Yams was found unresponsive in his Brooklyn apartment on the morning of January 18 and was taken to Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn, where he was pronounced dead. Now his friend and colleague A$AP Rocky is opening up about the news.

Speaking with the New York Times, Rocky explained that Yams had "always had a struggle with drugs. That was his thing."

In the interview, he recalled the night that Yams passed away. He was at Yams and A$AP Lou's Brooklyn apartment when he and Lou found Yams at 3 a.m., unconscious in his bed, covered in vomit.

"I just look at his face. I look at Lou. You could just tell. We knew," Rocky said. "I was scared. I was wilding on everybody, like, 'Who let him do drugs?,' even though you can't blame nobody."

When Yam's body was taken to Woodhull Medical Center, Rocky's ex-girlfriend, model Chanel Iman, met up with them.

"They were tight," he said. "She really took it hard, man. She was crying more than me."

However, Rocky says he doesn't feel lonely now that Yams is gone, and he plans to continue to look to him for guidance from beyond the grave.

"I don't feel alone. I just miss him," he said. "I'm going to talk to him and ask him what's up. And we're going to see if he's still got it even from up there."

As previously reported, Yams was more of a behind-the-scenes player in the hip-hop collective. He was one of three Harlem residents (along with A$AP Illz andA$AP Bari) who founded the A$AP Mob in 2007. Rocky, who kickstarted the group into international prominence, joined during 2008.

Yams will be credited as an executive producer on Rocky's forthcoming album, which is set to feature FKA Twigs, Lykke Li, Juicy J and more.

Yams can be heard posthumously on A$AP TyTy's single "Chamber Lock."
