Little Big Town isn't a group that is big on controversy. However, fans of the country quartet in Boise, Idaho, weren't thrilled to hear its second single from Pain Killer titled "Girl Crush." The tune contains a woman who's jealous of her ex-boyfriend's new love interest. Listeners found some of the lyrics of the song to be too provocative, The Washington Post reports.
Morning show host Alana Lynn for 104.3 in Boise brought the mini controversy to light. Fans called and emailed Lynn, saying that the song promotes "the gay agenda."
Here's a sampling of the lyrics:
"I want to taste her lips, yeah cause they taste like you / I want to drown myself in a bottle of her perfume. I want her long blond hair, I want her magic touch / Yeah cause maybe then, you'd want me just as much. . . I got a girl crush," Karen Fairchild sings.
The lyrics don't actually have anything to do with two women in love. The ex-girlfriend wants her boyfriend back, so she's envious of the new girl. Other radio stations have banned the song, though, and Lynn has stopped playing it during the morning show.
Syndicated country host Bobby Bones was disappointed in fans.
"Is it frustrating to you that here is your song - that is one of the Top 10 sellers for weeks and weeks and weeks - and people on the radio are still afraid to play it because they think it's a 'lesbian song?'" he asked the group. "It would drive me insane!"
"Just the fact that we're still discussing that, number one, there's so many problems with that whole issue," Fairchild responded.
Despite the unwillingness of some stations to play the song, it's done just fine on the charts. It hit 84 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is a top seller on iTunes.
