5 Seconds of Summer Second Album Hoax: 5SOS Fandom Gets Bored, Plays Twitter Prank

Watch out, because April Fools' Day seems to be starting early. After One Direction dominated the Twitter fandom trending topics over the last 15 or so hours due to that Louis Tomlinson/Naughty Boy feud, the 5 Seconds of Summer "family" had enough... and decided to spread the rumor that the band's second studio album had leaked in full online.

The hashtag #5SOSALBUM2 quickly became the top worldwide trending topic on Twitter today (March 31) after, what else, the fandom got bored and decided to knock the #masterofallwisdom off his post.

Fan Twitters tweeted vague messages about how good the new 5SOS songs are, citing bass solos from Calum Hood and a studio version of "Superhero" as album highlights.

But, it doesn't seem like everyone was in on the joke. While some users teased that they had links to the album that could be achieved through direct messages, others flooded to Twitter for answers in presumed confusion.

And, it turns out, the whole thing was a hoax. Even 5 Seconds of Summer member Ashton Irwin spoke out on the incident, with the insightful "what? Lol."

While 5SOS' album isn't online quite yet, we do know some things about the follow-up to their 2014 self-titled debut effort.

In August, Irwin told Billboard that the band's sophomore album will be out this year, and that their extensive touring schedule will influence the music. "I think when you're on the road you've got to just live out what's happening, then when you get back to the studio you've got a lot to write about. I don't want to write the same album again, so I go out there and see what life has for me, and then I'll go back and I'll write about it," he said. "We've got a lot of time coming up, actually, to write and record again, so I'm really looking forward to that 'cause I'm feeling like I miss that at the moment."
