It has been announced that David Bowie's glam rock anthem "Rebel Rebel" will be released as a special edition 40th anniversary 7" picture disc this year. The song, released in February 1974, appeared on Bowie's acclaimed album Diamond Dogs and was the last glam hit for the iconic artist before his sound transitioned.
The A-side of the limited edition 7" picture disc features the original single mix of the track. The track hasn't been available on 7" since the early 1980's. The AA-side features the US Version of the track, which is a remixed version of the song that was released in May 1974.
"Rebel Rebel" reached number five on the U.K. Singles Chart in 1974, and made it to the 64 spot in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. On the original single released, the B-side was another hit, "Queen Bitch." Bowie appeared on the Dutch television show TopPop in '74, which is where the picture disc images were pulled from.
Bowie has maintained pervasive musical relevance over the years, starting with his self-titled album in 1969 and staying consistent up to 2013's The Next Day.
"Rebel Rebel" is one of the most covered songs out there, rightfully so. Some artists who have taken on the song both in recordings and live include Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Bryan Adams, Duran Duran, Iggy Pop and Lenny Kravitz, and Seu Jorge delivered his version in Portuguese in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic.
