Pras Michel of The Fugees apparently is a big-time political donor. It was reported that the Grammy-winning rapper provided $350,00 to political group, Black Men Vote.
According to Slate, a month prior to the 2012 presidential election, Black Men Vote, a super PAC that mobilized young Black men to support President Barack Obama, sought to gain a "$500,000 donor." Fugees founder, Pras, turned out to be one of the PAC's biggest supporters. In a recent interview with the Center for Public Integrity via Slate, Pras explained:
"The best way we can make a change is empowering one another. I put my money where my mouth was."
Pras' contribution greatly assisted the efforts of Black Men Vote. His political work also extends to his documentary called, Sweet Micky For President, which released in January earlier this year via IMDB. The documentary follows Pras on his return to Haiti, his homeland, following the devastating 2010 earthquake. He joined his former band mate, Wyclef Jean, to fight political corruption and civic unrest.
In an interview with Ebony, Pras shared his inspiration for making the documentary and for his support of Haitian President Michel Martelly.
"I think the focus of the documentary is the behind of the scenes, you get to see what goes on inside a campaign," he told Ebony. "You get to get a sense of an evolution of this guy that one would argue is one of the most provocative singers in Haiti. As far as what he's done in his career, as far as entertainment and to see him do that transformation from going to practice on stage to becoming head of state. It's one of those stories if you wrote a script and made a narrative movie out of it, people would say, 'get the f--k outta here' but you know this story is just one of those things that actually happened."
