GLC has recently announced that Kanye West and Damon Dash will co-executively produce his forthcoming album, The Book of St. Ism.
According to The Fader, Dash got West involved after listening to GLC's music.
"GLC is the best at what he does," Dash said via press release according to The Fader. "When he played me his music, I knew I wanted to put this album together and I gave Kanye a call and brought him in."
GLC, born Leonard L. Harris, grew up in the south side of Chicago. According to his biography on Glcitymusic.com, the rapper lost both his parents at a young age and became a member of Growth & Development, a Chicago street organization. He adopted GLC "Gangsta Legendary Crisis" as a teenager and signed to West's G.O.O. D Music label. GLC was featured on "Spaceship" off West's The College Dropout and "Drive Slow" off Late Registration. As up and coming rappers in Chicago, West and GLC formed group called The Go Getters, in their earlier days.
In an interview with Hiphopdx in 2010, GLC shared how he met West and how they developed their friendship.
"I met Kanye through a mutual friend, Andre Frazier, who's featured on my upcoming album," he said. "He had a friend that he had met in elementary school by the name of Kanye, and while they were in school together they were like a Rap/Dance group and they used to handle they business. Andre ran into Kanye again during his teenage years at a grocery store or somethin', they got back in tune with one another and there it was; Andre introduced me to Kanye."
GLC has worked with the likes of Bun B, Nas, Jay-Z, T.I., Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar, Kid Kudi, Twista, John Legend, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Dame Dash, Keyshia Cole, Paul Wall, Crucial Conflict, Manfred Mann & Bruce Springsteen, according to Glcitymusic.
GLC explaines what his "Ism" ideology is for his new album,
"The ism teaches kids and adults to apply themselves and to supply their wealth," he said according to The Fader. "All while understanding that the only limitations you'll ever have are those that you place on yourself."
