In the beginning of October we reported that The Dead Weather would release a series of new singles leading up to a new album in 2015. We heard the first track of the series, the ghoulish garage-blues rocker "Open Up (That's Enough)" back in December, but now the band has released the B-side "Rough Detective."
The song opens unassumingly but quickly turns into a whirlwind of grimy guitar, crashing drums and maniacal laughter. Jack White and Alison Mosshart take on vocals together again with White singing as the "rough detective with the smoky eyes" and Mosshart singing as the "usual suspect" always on the run. "Don't make me run, baby, don't make me run," they both holler.
"Rough Detective" and "Open Up (That's Enough) were first released on 7-inch vinyl as part of the Third Man's Vault subscription series. As we reported previously, the album was released on a "striking yellow jacket vinyl and coupled with a custom glue-pocket picture sleeve." Each new song in the series will eventually become available digitally but only after the Vault subscriptions have been sent to subscribers.
In a statement, Third Man explained that the series is "unlike anything else the band has ever done and are both ample reminders of the ferocity of this motley collection of low-lifes, grifters and ne'er-do-wells. These songs are not throw-aways. These songs are not demos. These songs are not outtakes."
The band will continue to release songs in sets of two until 2015 at which time they will release a full-length album containing the previously released singles as well as "many more album-only tracks."
