Cosmopolitan magazine turns 50 years old in April, and the publication is bringing in its golden anniversary the same way it celebrated its 25th... with Madonna on the cover. Alongside the bold cover, the "Ghosttown" singer opened up to Cosmo about aging in the music industry and working with Kanye West on her new album Rebel Heart.
Madonna's cover is just as bold as she is. Clutching pearls in her teeth (is that a metaphor?) the 56-year-old "queen of pop," well, pops against a bright red background, with a lacy black mask on her face.
The Cosmopolitan cover isn't the only thing that's making a statement in the magazine - always the outspoken musician, Madonna opened up about relevancy and sexism in the music industry, something that she knows a little too much about.
"Don't be fooled, not much has changed - certainly not for women," she said about ageism and sexism in the music industry. "We still live in a very sexist society that wants to limit people. Since I started, I've had people giving me a hard time because they didn't think you could be sexual or have sexuality or sensuality in your work and be intelligent at the same time. For me, the fight has never ended."
She also opened up about perhaps having more or less musical success and relevancy, though it's not something that seems to bother her too much. "Popularity comes and goes. You need to know who you are, what you stand for, and why you're here," she said.
Madonna is currently promoting her new album Rebel Heart, and she admitted that recording the album wasn't always easy - especially when working with Kanye West. "It's a little bit of a bullfight, but we take turns. He knows that he's walking into a room with a person with a strong point of view, and I do too," she said. "I listen to what he has to say, take it in, and he listens to what I say and takes it in. We didn't agree on everything, but he has good ideas."
