Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina of Pussy Riot were released from prison last month. The Associated Press now reports they will be "appearing" at the Bringing Human Rights Home concert in Brooklyn, New York. The show is weeks away -- February 5th starting at 8pm at Barclays Center. Amnesty International says they will "participate" -- so they're going to perform, right?
Of the show, Tolokonnikova and Alekhina say: "We are happy to support Amnesty International's work on behalf of human rights and political prisoners...We will never forget what it's like to be in prison after a political conviction. We have vowed to continue helping those who remain behind bars and we hope to see you all at the Amnesty International concert on February 5th in Brooklyn!"
The aim of the concert is to grow attention toward the human rights cause, and many acts will join in support. So far here's the list involved: Flaming Lips, Cake, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Imagine Dragons, Tegan and Sara, The Fray, Cold War Kids, Colbie Caillat. Day Reynolds, lead singer of Imagine Dragons said: "Amnesty's past concerts have featured some of the greatest artists of our generation and have been catalysts for real, measurable change."
In the past, the Amnesty International backed concert has had performances from U2, Sting and Lou Reed. Tickets can now be bought at Ticketmaster.
Tolokonnikova and Alekhina were arrested for a prohibited performance in the Christ The Savior Cathedral during March 2012. Many musicians across the globe called for their release. After 21 months they were freed; the Russian punk band members have already jumped back into showing up at poignant performances for a cause.
