Mumford and Sons may be plugged in now but the soft/hard dynamics of the once folky rockers remains. Today (April 20), the latest song from Mumford and Sons' new album Wilder Mind arrived online in the form of an official live video, and "Snake Eyes" has plenty of venom and charged emotion.
Though the banjos continue to be swapped out for guitars and that bass went from upright to plugged in, the essence of what made Mumford connect to millions of fans around the world remains. "Snake Eyes" begins tenderly and quietly, with Marcus Mumford singing of heartbreak over drippy guitars and the lightest taps on the drumset.
And, in true Mumford and Sons fashion, the song soon builds into a huge explosion - though the banjo and piano led jams are now dominated by synthesizers and electric guitars. The energy of "White Blank Page" or "Lover of the Light" is there but it's, well, sonically totally different - poppier, sweeter. All at once, "Snake Eyes" is comfortably familiar and totally new for Mumford and Sons.
But, like "The Wolf," "Snake Eyes" helps to bridge the gap between Mumford of yore and the band's 2015 edition. Though the lead single from Wilder Mind smacked listeners in the face with its Coldplay/U2 hybrid of sounds, the latest two offerings have proved that maybe this music won't be so bad, after all.
