Are you a fan of Fred Armisen's fictional bands from Saturday Night Live? Well, you're in luck. Armisen has announced that he is putting together a collection of 7" singles by some of those fictional bands via Drag City, according to Pitchfork.
The series is called "Hometown Heroes," and it features songs from "Fred's extensive record collection," highlighting "the regional music stars of the past decade and local one-hit wonders," a press release explains.
The first single is due out February 18, featuring the Blue Jean Committee's "Massachusetts Afternoon" and The Fingerlings' "Embrace Me." According to a press release, the Blue Jean Committee is a late 1970s group from Northampton, Massachusetts. "Comprised of some of the most sought after local session musicians, the group was most defined by Richie Cornish's busy talk-singing lyrical style. The gently soulful 'Massachusetts Afternoon' celebrates the time in one's life when independence, friendships, and the autumn sunset seem to go on forever."
"Massachusetts Afternoon" aired on a 2011 episode hosted by Jason Segal with cameos from Florence Welch, Paul Rudd and some Muppets characters.
The press release describes The Fingerlings as a band from Bath, England, who were "a prolific synth/post-disco band who released twelve EPs between 1981 and 1983. Typically, a group such as this would have been formed at an art college, and The Fingerlings were no different. Their aesthetically meticulous nature earned them a reputation for creating some of the most elaborate and expensive 12' EP covers ever to be produced in the UK. 'Embrace Me' is the jam, a huge local hit, its lyrics evoking imagery of neon framed cities like Paris and Berlin."
"Embrace Me" aired during a 2011 sketch starring Armisen, host Dana Carvey, Bill Hader and Paul Brittain.
