Miley Cyrus Opens Up About Sexuality, Feminism & Being OK Alone in TIME Magazine Interview

Miley Cyrus: Joan Jett

After Cyrus was quoted as saying her relationships haven't all been "straight, heterosexual" ones and implying that she is genderqueer, the 22-year-old told TIME she has nothing to hide, and she owes it all to feminism.

"I'm not hiding my sexuality. For me, I don't want to label myself as anything," Cyrus said. "We love putting people in categories, but what I like sexually isn't going to label me as a person."

Citing her Annie Leibovitz photoshoot from when she was just a teenager, Cyrus said that "our world revolves around sex" and that "there's all this pressure to define yourself sexually, but why?"

In addition to refusing to be put in a sexuality box, Cyrus also admitted that she doesn't need to be in a relationship with a man or woman to feel satisfied in her life, something she can't imagine being the case just a generation ago.

"It has a lot to do with being a feminist, but I'm finally OK with being alone. I think that's something we have to talk about more: that you can be alone," she said. "There are times in my life where I've had boyfriends or girlfriends. And there are times where I just love being with myself and don't want to give part of myself away to someone else... I think that's a new freedom for women, especially. I don't know that my mother would have been able to be 22 and secure in being alone. But my future doesn't rely on having a partner."
