'Good Time' theft lawsuit results in massive fine for Carly Rae Jepsen, Owl City

It seems like Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City's good time together is over. Yesterday (Jan. 30), a judge settled a lawsuit between little known singer Ally Burnett and Jepsen and Adam Young (Owl City) with the pronouncement that their 2012 top 10 single "Good Time" was too similar to Burnett's own track "Ah, It's A Love Song." And now they have to pay a hefty fine.

According to TMZ, Young and Jepsen's record company BMI owes Burnett $804,000 in damages and back money.

In an article from Oct. 2012 from Billboard.com, the original lawsuit from Burnett claimed that Jepsen and Young "copied a prominent motif of her song to create the pop hit 'Good Time.'" Such motifs are rather technical in their musicology but include things such as pitch sequence, melody, rhythmic construction and timbre.

Though Burnett's track has a more pop-rock feel than the sugary sweet "Good Time," there are notable similarities between the singing styles of the two songs. Most notably, the "Oh" refrains in the choruses.

Apparently, that and the other technical details were enough to convict Jepsen and Young of musical theft.
