In the mind of Directioners, of course there's no musical artist that's bigger than the heartthrob boy band One Direction. And now, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has confirmed that fact. The music promoting organization has named One Direction as the most popular musical act of 2013.
In a list published Thursday (Jan. 30), the "Story Of My Life" group is the first ever to receive the IFPI's award. 1D's global success for 2013 was chalked up to its massive album Midnight Memories, which was the top-selling album in the UK for 2013 and topped the US Billboard 200. One Direction also owed its 2013 success to hit singles such as "Best Song Ever" and "Story Of My Life," which chalked up massive streaming hits thanks to viral videos.
Of course, that's not all One Direction did in 2013. In addition to dozens of product lines and endorsements, the band also released its first concert film/documentary This Is Us, which raked in nearly $30 million at the US box office.
One Direction's top spot on the IFPI list means that Harry, Niall, Liam, Zayn and Louis beat out other international stars such as Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars and Rihanna.
